Signs you need to replace your roof before winter
If your roof is 15 to 20 years old by now then it is possible that you might need to replace it before the winter come. But of course that is not always the case and there are roofs that can last for up to 25 years and still function properly. Either way, you might want to hire a professional to take a good look at your roof so as to ensure that will be able to withstand the bad weather to come. In most cases the age of your roof is normally the major factor for replacing your roof but of course there are other signs that you should look out for. In this article we discuss some of those signs and if your roof shows any of the sign that we will discuss below, you need to contact a professional as soon as possible to assess your roof.
Missing Shingles
It will not take you a lot of time to inspect your roof and check if there are any missing shingles. Look at your roof carefully and confirm if there are any missing shingles or if there are some shingles that look like they are going to fall off at any moment.
It is the roof shingles that act as the as the protective barrier between the top of your roof and the layers that lie beneath the top of it. And if the shingles fall off it will be very possible for water to find its way down to your roof and cause it to rot and we know what will happen when your roof begins to rot. It will not even take long before your roof begins to leak even if it is just one missing shingle.
So if you notice even one missing shingle, make sure to hire a professional to replace the shingle as soon as possible or have the entire roof replaced if the shingle problem has gone out of control. If you don’t take the necessary steps as soon as possible, you might end up spending way more money in future. The more you wait to replace the shingles the more it is going to cost you in future.
Granules from the shingles lining the gutters
When you take a look from a distance, you might think that your roof is just alright but if you find lots of granules while you are cleaning your gutters, then this might be another sign that your roof needs some special attention from a professional. The granules that falls off from the shingles, they make the roof weaker generally.
And in such a case it might become quite difficult to figure out the shingles from which the granules are falling from. And if you don’t really know where the granules are coming from, maybe it is wise to replace your roof instead of keeping on doing roof repair from time to time.
Your roof needs to be at its best condition as the winter approaches because you will most probably be spending most of your time in your house. So instead of leaving the performance of your roof to fate, be sure that it will be at peak performance this winter by replacing it if you notice lots of granules lining your gutters.
Rising Energy Costs
Take your time and check out the energy bills during the winter for the last few winters and check out how much you have been using for each winter. If it turns out that you have been using more money during the winters, it might because the roof is not insulated well enough. Or it could also be an indicator that the windows of your room are on the older side. Or it could be that your roof is allowing too much heat to escape when it comes to the winter season.
I mean there might just be a lot of problems that can be causing the increased energy bills during the winters. You might make some repairs to try lower the energy bills but if you want to be sure that the energy bills during the winters go down, be sure to replace your roof.
Moss or Mould Growth
If you can spot some green spots on your roof then it is likely that it is moss or mold growing on your roof. Well, it might not seem like a big problem from the beginning but it does not take too long for the moss to grow and cover a large part of your roof. If they do, they will be able to trap significant amount of water on your roof and when that happen, it will not be long before your roof begin rotting.
And when your roof starts rotting it will begin leaking which puts your roof in jeopardy once the snow starts falling. Maybe you will not have to replace your roof just because your roof has moss or mold growing but you might want to get rid of it as soon as possible and if it gets out of control, then be sure to replace your roof.
Visible Leaks in your Roof
Well, I guess this is the most obvious sign that your roof needs a replacement this winter. This is a sign that you should definitely not ignore so when it rains be sure to get to the attic and have a good look at your roof. And if you see moisture making its way into the space, then you have a problem that needs to be solved. Keep an eye on wet spots on the ceiling as well as on the walls of your home which are the normal indicators that your roof is leaking. And if your roof is leaking, you might want to replace it before winter comes.
