3 Tips to Prepare your Roof for Summer

While we are almost in May and the April showers are almost ending, it’s time to check on your roof. After all, the heavy rain, snow, and wind of an entire Autumn and Winter can cause some damages even if you don’t see them. So, as a homeowner, you want to make sure that your roof is in perfect conditions not only for the nest winter as well as if there is something that you need to get done, this is the best time of the year.

So, what can you do? How can you make sure that your roof is in perfect conditions and that you can rest assured that even if it rains, you won’t have any nasty surprise?

1. Take A Look At Your Shingles Or Tiles

One of the most important things that you should do when the nice weather arrives is to check your shingles or tiles. The truth is that the roof is the part of your home that is more subjected to the bad weather. From heavy snow to icy rain, the freezing temperatures, they can all negatively affect your roof. So, what you need to do is to inspect your shingles to ensure that they are not deteriorating or curling, as well as you also need to make sure that there aren’t any pieces missing.

But why is this so important? While we don’t have to explain why it is important to notice if you don’t have any parts missing, you probably don’t know why curling or deterioration is important. The truth is that when you notice that your shingles are curling, this means that they can easily break off in case there is some heavy wind. This will end up creating some gaps in your roof. On the other hand, when a shingle deteriorates, you will notice that the granules will start to rub off. And when enough granules are lost, you may end up with a roof leak.

2. Check your Skylights

More and more people are using skylights or sun tunnels in their homes. If you are one of them, make sure to check it out as well as all the area around them.

There are two main things that you will need to do in what concerns skylights. The first thing is that you will need to see if there are any leans in the window itself. Then, you want to make sure that the seal where your window connects to the roof remains intact.

3. Check your Gutters

After a big winter like the one we had this year, it is extremely important to check your gutters. You will need to see if they are clogged, leaky, or even loose.

The truth is that when your gutters aren’t working as they should, the drainage process won’t occur. So, you may end up with the water running down to the ground in case you have a leak. On the other hand, you may also notice that your gutters at loose. In case this happens, and with the accumulated water that turns heavier, your gutters may end up failing and the water will drop immediately from there.

As you can see, there are a lot of things that you need to check on your roof. However, by doing it during this period, you will have enough time to fix them just in time for the next winter.
