Can I Replace My Roof In Cold Weather?
Now that the leaves have fallen from the trees and Old Man Winter is on his way with his blustery winds and heavy snows you might be wondering if it’s too late in the year to get your roof replaced. While it’s true that weather is certainly a factor when it comes to replacing a roof, you might not be completely out of luck. Here’s what you need to know about getting a roof replaced during the cold months.
Having your roof replaced in the early winter is also a great way to save money on heating costs. If you leave a damaged roof through Winter without replacing it, you’ll lose a lot of heat and a lot of money along with it.
Having A Roof Replaced In The Winter
Sometimes you get stuck in a situation in which your roof has to be replaced in the middle of Winter. Maybe you didn’t have enough money to replace it in the Fall or you just didn’t notice how badly damaged it was until Winter set in. Whatever the reason, replacing a roof in the Winter is possible, but it comes with some caveats.
For one thing, compressors and roofing tools like nail guns can freeze up which can prevent the nails from being inserted at the right depths. Be sure to hire a reputable company that ensures the weather conditions will not impede their success. Proper forecast, quality material, and skilled roofers make a quality roof possible.
Complications With Shingles In Extreme Cold
When installing shingles in extremely cold weather conditions, there are some important factors to keep in mind. For starters, the shingles can curl in the cold in an unfortunate phenomenon known as ‘cold curl’ which means they have to be sealed by hand. Sealing shingles by hand is one of the best ways to prevent ‘cold curl’ but it will also make the job longer and more difficult.
How Different Roofing Materials Are Affected By Cold Weather
Certain roofing materials are more difficult to work within cold weather than others. If you have a rolled roof, for example, it’s not a good idea to have your roof replaced in cold weather. That’s because the tar and sealant won’t dry properly due to the cold weather.
As for asphalt shingles, these should be installed when the temperature is between 4-26 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is significantly colder than 4 degrees Celsius, you might want to consider waiting until the next stretch of warm weather to replace your roof.
