Should I change my fascia at the same time as my roof?
The roof is typically the topmost layer of any building or house. Its main purpose is to provide shelter and protection from UV rays and harsh weather conditions such as rain, sunlight, strong winds and lightning. Roofs come in many different materials and designs. Some common materials are wood, metal, asphalt shingles, stone slate and power walls which are made up of solar panels. They also vary based on design and shape such as the pyramid, curved, domed, hipped, gabled and flat. The choice of material and design is highly subjective to preference as well as requirements.
Fascia boards, on the other hand, are a part of the exterior of the house, but they are not the topmost layer. In fact, they come under the soffits which in turn come under the roof. The main purpose of fascia board is to provide guttering and ventilation for the house. Fascia boards are more prone to damage and need replacement more often than roofs. Based on the type of material being used, fascia boards can be made from wood, PVC, aluminum, vinyl, fiber, and composite materials.
Knowing when its time for a roof replacement
Since the roof is the most exposed part of the house, it goes through a lot of damage from external factors. With time, it would need to be replaced. Here are some signs that mean that you need a new roof:
Water Damage – Water damage is the topmost reason to replace a roof. Dampness, puddles or mildew are sometimes taken lightly, but they can lead to serious damage. Therefore they should either be fixed at an early stage, or the roof should be replaced. Watermarks or moss can be signs of seepage and cracks, which can cause harm to the walls as well.
Light or dust – If you see the light or dust coming from the roof into your house, it means there are major cracks or holes in the holes. That would need an urgent replacement of the roof to prevent any further damage.
Missing Tiles or Shingles – If you realize that a few tiles or shingles on your roof are missing or moving about, it may be a sign that the roof is losing its structural integrity, In that case, it would be the time to think about getting a new roof instead of repairing the existing one.
Mould Growth – If there is mold or moss developing on your roof, it can grow between your tiles and cause gaps or even cracks between them. This leads to water damage and seeping. If the growth has been going on for some time without knowledge, you should get the damage analyzed and replace the roof if needed.
How to know that the fascia needs replacement?
Here are some signs that fascia needs to be replaced:
- Any sign of asbestos or even a hunch should be checked in the fascia
- Mold growth in the fascia is damaging as well
- Pests and nests of birds inside the fascia
- Cracks in the paint or fascia
- Water damage
